Root User on a Mac

I came across a problem trying to install mySQL on my other machine – i didn’t have permissions to do anything – I need to be a root user.

This was easily solved (I’m on OS X Lion)

  1. Go to System Prefs

  2. Click on your login and the click the Join.. button

  3. Click Open directory Utility at the top (whoa – didn’t know that was there)

  4. Enter name and password (if required)

  5. From Edit menu on toolbar choose Enable Root User

  6. Enter a password for the root user

Note – apparently you should only use the root user account when required and log out when finished and that makes perfect sense to me.
